Advancing the social, educational, civic and economic interest of the village and it’s inhabitants

ABOUT US

The Leeds Civic Association is able to advance its goals because Leeds families, individuals and businesses care about the community. LCA sponsored projects depend on the engagment, energy and creativity of volunteers. Here are some of the things the LCA does for our community:

KEEPING YOU INFORMED

The LCA hosts candidate forums, book readings by local authors, and community presentations by city officials. If there are new city policies or funding criteria for projects that effect Leeds, we want you to be informed and have an opportunity to weigh in. The LCA publishes a newsletter several times a year to keep you informed on village news and upcoming events.

STEWARDS OF LEEDS CONSERVATION LAND

The LCA holds the conservation restrictions for the Robert’s Hill Section of the Sawmill Hills Conservation Area and the conservation area that extends east from behind Saint Mary’s cemetery and extends to the Mill River on the west. The LCA helps maintain trails and notifies the City if there are any large issues. Starting in 2017, the LCA partnered with the working group from Broad Brook Coalition to develop the new Beaver Brook Greenway Conservation Area off of Haydenville Road. LCA members worked to create trails, helped build a wildlife blind, designed interpretive signage, and hosted the June 2019 grand opening. The LCA will continue to help maintain the Robert’s Hill and Beaver Brook Greenway trails.

SUPPORTING PROJECTS THAT BENEFIT AND BEAUTIFY THE VILLAGE

The bench along the bike path at Mulberry Park was purchased by the LCA in 2019. Nearby is one of the eight, award winning, historical signs that are posted around the village. The signage project was a two year LCA volunteer effort and completed in 2018. In 2000, a pocket park was created on Main Street to honor the victims of the 1874 Flood. The garden at Mulberry Street was forged out of the hill by LCA volunteers in ???. The Mulberry Street garden, the Flood Memorial, and our roadsides and trails all need seasonal attention and LCA volunteers have been taking on these tasks for decades helping to keep the village looking its best.

ADVOCATING FOR HOTEL BRIDGE TO BE RESTORED TO A WALKING BRIDGE

Restoring the Hotel Bridge has been an ongoing focus for the LCA for many years. The LCA has organized several bike-ride fundraisers, designed and produced Hotel Bridge fund-raising merchandise such as carry bags, hats, T-shirts, note cards and coffee mugs. Profits from the annual Pizza Party go the LCA Hotel Bridge Restoration Fund. The LCA hired engineers form the Ohio-based iron bridge restoration company, Workin’ Bridges, to access the iron bridge in 2017 and prepare a restoration proposal. The LCA has made presentations to the DPW and Mayor about the importance of opening the Hotel Bridge to walkers. These efforts and your support of them are greatly appreciated. We all look forward to once again walking across the historic bridge!

MARK AND PATRICIA BRADFORD MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship fund was established by the Leeds community in 1992. It honors Mark Bradford, president of the LCA at the time, and his wife Patricia who both died in a tragic accident while on vacation in Mexico that year. Bradford Memorial Scholarships are awarded each year by the LCA to high school students choosing to continue their education.

HOSTING ANNUAL COMMUNITY PARTIES

The LCA organizes and hosts several annual parties and celebrations each year. The Beat the Winter Blues Pizza Party and the Pumpkin Party have been a recurring event since 1996! The Memorial Day Ceremony and Wreath Laying is hosted by the LCA and VFW. Our annual village-wide tag sale is usually held in June and the LCA Ice Cream Social featuring Mt.Tom’s ice cream is an end of summer favorite.
