Julie Bowers of Workin\u2019 Bridges, the iron bridge restoration outfit\u00a0that performed a March 2015 site visit and submitted a scope of\u00a0work report on Hotel Bridge, has done further reseach on lifting\u00a0Hotel Bridge to the parking lot across Main Street to make the\u00a0repairs on land. Bowers contacted the utility companies over the\u00a0summer to determine what actions might be feasable. Her findings\u00a0to date follow: Moving electric, cable, and phone is doable. The big\u00a0hinderance is that there is a Columbia Gas service line that runs\u00a0across the south side of the bridge deck. The line carries gas to Water\u00a0Street customers. Rerouting the line would be expensive (Columbia\u00a0gas pays the city for use of resources). Temporary piles to hold the\u00a0gas line in place while the bridge is moved would be expensive as\u00a0well. Unfortunately, in order to move Hotel Bridge to land it would\u00a0require two 500 ton cranes, and dollies, not the smaller crane that\u00a0Julie used for the quote given at the June 1st community meeting.\u00a0The conclusion drawn is that it is not a feasable alternative to move\u00a0the bridge to the parking lot for repairs.<\/p>\n
Julie is currently seeking further information from the engineering\u00a0firm, Stantec Associates, that ran the original load capacity\u00a0numbers on the bridge. Stantec used heavy tonnage to determine\u00a0the load capacity. Workin\u2019 Bridges would like them to rerun the\u00a0load capacity using more realistic pedestrian only weight figures.\u00a0Just a few days ago Paul Duquette of Stantec responded to Julie\u2019s\u00a0inquiries and said he will be conferring with his structural and\u00a0legal team to see if they can change a recommendation with new\u00a0data. If they are able to rerun the data, fewer repairs will have to be\u00a0done in order to make the bridge safe for pedestrians.
